Melba boys struggle in first week

New coach loses first three games — Dave Lenz lost his Melba High School boys’ basketball coaching debut last week on the road.
Jordon Swainston scored 24 points on Dec. 3 to send Wendell to a 62-59 victory in the Trojans’ home opener.
Carsten Volkers led the Mustangs (0-3) with 18 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Wyatt Hansen had seven boards to go with 12 points.
Owen Hansen added eight points for Melba (0-1), and Isaiah Shoemaker filled the stat sheet with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Jonathan Swainston tallied 18 points for Wendell.
Saturday: Declo 47, Melba 28 — The Mustangs’ scoring woes continued in a non-conference road loss.
Isaiah Shoemaker scored 13 points as Melba was held below 40 points for the second consecutive night.
Rylan Frank chipped in seven points.
Declo’s Emmett Gibby led all scorers with 23 points.
Friday: Cole Valley Christian 65, Melba 34 — A matchup with a former 2A Western Idaho Conference foe didn’t go the Mustangs’ way.
The Chargers, who are now members of the 4A Snake River Valley conference, romped to a home-court win behind 20 points from Adam Ashmead.
Shoemaker scored 18 points for Melba, and he added five rebounds and three assists.
Tavin Heritage put in six points for the visitors while grabbing five boards.
