HHS girls’ offensive output sputters

Comeback vs. Gooding runs out of steam — Homedale High School’s losing streak stretched to four girls’ basketball games last week.
The Trojans’ scoring woes continued in a pair of slow starts in non-conference action.
Former conference foe Parma rolled to a 62-23 win on Dec. 3 on the Trojans’ floor.
Facing a 32-15 halftime deficit, the Trojans never had a chance to get back into the game.
The Panthers started the second half on a 22-8 run and then shut out Homedale in the fourth quarter.
Parma (5-1), which dropped down to the 3A Western Idaho Conference with realignment, scored 28 points off 27 Homedale turnovers.
The Panthers also connected on five of seven three-point attempts from the left side of the floor while knocking in seven total.
Tiana Sorenson led Homedale with nine points. She dropped in two of the team’s three-point goals.
Stella Heck had the Trojans’ other treys on the way to eight points. She was perfect from the floor (5-for-5) and led the team with three steals.
Belen Asumendi grabbed three defensive rebounds to lead Homedale as Parma dominated on the glass with a 33-10 edge.
Kaidance Kaiser converted all three of her long-distance shots and led all scorers with 16 points. She was one of three Parma players to reach double figures.
Rylie Calkins, last year’ s co-player of the year in the 3A Snake River Valley conference, added 14 points, six assists and five steals. Aarey Harris chipped in 15 points and was shared the game rebounding lead with Kaiser at seven boards apiece.
Friday: Gooding 44, Homedale 34 — Assisted by the Trojans’ personnel issues, the Senators held their non-conference visitors to seven points in the game’s first 16 minutes, diminishing the power Homedale showed in an attempted comeback after halftime.
“We got in some foul trouble early that contributed to digging ourselves a first half hole, but made a spirited effort in the second half, closing to within 28-23 at one point,” HHS coach Benji Sorenson said.
“But (we) ran out of steam a bit.”
Homedale’s comeback bid included 30 three-point shot attempts. Stella Heck and Tiana Sorenson hit on a two attempts, and Whitlee Burch had the team’s other successful shot from beyond the line.
Sorenson led the team with 13 points, and she grabbed four of her five rebounds on defense.
Belen Asumendi and Burch shared the team lead with seven boards each. Burch collected six on the defensive end.
Asumendi and Heck scored six points each, and Asumendi led the way with three assists while coming up with three steals.
Stephanie Quezada paced the defense with four steals.
The Trojans committed 23 turnovers, which led to
Gooding’s Fallon Millican led all players with 14 points and 19 rebounds. She pulled down 12 boards on Homedale’s glass. Teammate Amaia Dayley popped three treys en route to 12 points.
